How I Lost My Wife, Only Child In Flood Accident - A Survivor's Story

Loved ones and other well-wishers have thronged the Kasoa residence of a survivor of the Adjei Kojo flood accident, Emmanuel Saah, to commiserate with the family.
His wife was part of mourners travelling from Tema to Accra on Sunday who got drowned together with a soldier couple and 13 others on the Tema Motorway.
Mr. Saah who was also in the pickup bed managed to swim to safety but now has to deal with the trauma of losing his wife, with his only child. The 11-year-old has been missing since the unfortunate incident.
He narrated what happened to Joy News’ Maxwell Agbagba who visited him at the family house.
According to him, they attended a funeral at Tema and just when they were about to leave, it started raining heavily.
“We were 17 in all, with three people sitting in the pick-up while 13 others were sitting in the bed of the vehicle.
“Before we got to the Ashiaman bridge area, the front tyre of the vehicle hit a pothole and the impact made the vehicle veer off the road landing into a culvert sort of,” he said.
This threw the car out of control and with those in the bed landing into the water collected at the bridge. It was survival for life as everyone struggled to save their life.
“The driver, a soldier as well as a soldier couple who were also inside the pickup all died on the spot. It was a very difficult and traumatic situation…just when I tried to come out of the pool of water, I fell back into the water because of the strong current.”
“I managed to cling to a stick at the edge of the water and come out,” he recounted how he survived the situation.
A visibly shaken Mr. Saah told the reporter that at the time, he did not see his wife and child but one other survivor told him she was with his child.
“She said she managed to hold onto my child for some time after the accident but because of the current, she had to let go and save herself. I never saw my wife after the accident.
“Losing my child Ato Kwamina has left me devastated…at least I will be at peace once I find the body…three days and counting and I have still not found my child which has left me very sad,” the teary father said.
