Norway finds 'Russian spy whale' off Arctic coast A beluga whale found off Norway's coast wearing a special Russian harness was probably trained by the Russian navy, a Norwegian expert says. Marine biologist Prof Audun Rikardsen said the harness had a GoPro camera holder and a label sourcing it to St Petersburg. A Norwegian fisherman managed to remove it from the whale. He said a Russian fellow scientist had told him that it was not the sort of kit that Russian scientists would use. Russia has a naval base in the region. The tame beluga repeatedly approached Norwegian boats off Ingoya, an Arctic island about 415km (258 miles) from Murmansk, where Russia's Northern Fleet is based. Belugas are native to Arctic waters. Norway's public broadcaster NRK has put out a video showing the beluga's harness being released. Prof Rikardsen told the BBC that the harness "was attached really tightly round its head, in front of its pectoral fins and it had clip...

Malaria Vaccine Test Starts in 🇲🇼 Malawi

A large-scale pilot of what has been called the world's first malaria vaccine to give partial protection to children has begun in Malawi. The RTS,S vaccine trains the immune system to attack the malaria parasite, which is spread by mosquito bites. Earlier, smaller trials showed that nearly 40% of the 5-to-17-month-olds who received it were protected. Malaria cases appear to be on the rise again after a decade of success in combating the deadly disease. "This is a landmark moment for immunisations, malaria control, and public health," Dr Kate O'Brien, Director of Immunisation and Vaccines at the World Health Organization, told the BBC. According to the most recent annual figures, global malaria cases are no longer falling, sparking concerns about its resurgence. Malawi is the first of three countries chosen for the pilot to roll out the vaccine. It aims to immunise 120,000 children aged two years and below. The other two countries, Ghana and Kenya, will introduce th...

47 mins ago The Asafo Market in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, went up in flame for the second time within 24 hours, ravaging properties running into thousands of cedis. Over 200 shops have been burnt into ashes in the second inferno that hit the market on Easter Sunday. This adds to three, the fire outbreaks that have been experienced in Kumasi in less than 72 hours. Though the cause of the fires are yet to be established, victims suspect it could be arson. 3news.com’s Ibrahim Abubakar reports that personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service arrived at the fire scene just 10 minutes after the market caught fire but “access to the place was a major challenge to them”. Had it not been that, the fire would have been brought under control to reduce the extent of damage caused, he reported.  They had arrived with three fire tenders. The fire started around 8pm but as at 10pm the fire personnel were still battling the inferno. Regional Fire Commande...

Snake Have Been Found In Liberian President George Weah Office.

Snakes have been found in Liberian President George Weah’s office, forcing him to work from his private residence, the BBC has learnt. Press secretary Smith Toby told the BBC that on Wednesday two black snakes were found in the foreign affairs ministry building, his official place of work. All staff have been told to stay away until 22 April. “It’s just to make sure that crawling and creeping things get fumigated from the building,” Mr Toby said. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosts the office of the president, so it did an internal memo asking the staff to stay home while they do the fumigation,” he said. The office of the president has been based in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since a fire in 2006 gutted the nearby presidential mansion. A FrontPage Africa news website video shows workers trying to attack the snakes  when they appeared near the building’s reception. “The snakes were never killed,” Mr Toby said. “There was a little hole somewhere [th...
